Route One
A downloadable solo journaling game
# Route One
*A solo journaling game for the second lead of someone else's romance.*
---
You are **Aoki Haruma** — or a name of your own — the second male lead of a serialized romance novel called *The Certain Winter*. You are a quiet second-year transfer student who arrived in the second week of the autumn semester. You rent a small studio above a bookshop four blocks from the school. You are kinder than you seem, more precise than you show. You love **Yumeno Chiharu** — the girl who sits by the window in the third row — from the third day you meet her. You know how the story ends. You have read the novel.
On the ninetieth day, at the school's winter festival, under paper lanterns strung along the seawall, she confesses to **Kiritani Ren** — the boy she has known since childhood. You are there. You smile as you have practiced. You leave the festival grounds alone.
**You have ninety days.**
You may play the second lead as written. You may quietly rewrite it. You may leave the story entirely, and let the writer's script continue without you.
The story does not know it will not choose you.
---
## How it plays
Draw one card per in-story day. Journal an entry as Haruma, moving through a story he has already read. Every prompt adjusts one of two tallies: **Role** (what the novel wrote for you) and **Letter** (what you send instead).
**The Letter** — a rule specific to this game. Before you begin, you pick one book from your shelf. A book that contains letters is ideal — an epistolary novel, published correspondence, Rilke, Kafka to Milena — but any book works. A novel. A memoir. A book of poems. When a prompt tells you to *consult the Letter*, you open the book to a random page and read the first complete sentence you see. That sentence becomes: a letter he would send if he could, or a letter she wrote and did not send him, or a fragment from the novel Haruma will one day publish in the life *The Certain Winter* does not follow. Different book on your shelf = different game.
## Three endings
- **The Second Lead's Ending** — the winter festival. The paper lanterns. Write the letter you would have sent her, and never send it. Fold it into the back of the journal.
- **The Author's Path** — you have written yourself out of her story. Take the train to a town the novel does not mention. Write the first page of the book Haruma is finally allowed to publish.
- **The Fade** — Role exceeds Letter by ten tallies. The story stops noticing you. Ritual close.
Sessions are 15–30 minutes. The full game takes 3–6 sittings.

## Content note
This is a game about being the second male lead in someone else's romance and having ninety days to decide what to do with a script you did not write.
It touches on: unrequited love, the small daily kindness of loving someone who will not love you back, the quiet violence of a story you cannot rewrite from inside, chosen exits, and the possibility of becoming the protagonist of a book the original novel does not follow.
There is no explicit violence, no gore, no sexual content. The stakes are emotional and biographical.
## About the press
Wrong Route Games publishes solo journaling games for the characters the story cast as the villain, the rival, the doomed love interest, and the reincarnated NPCs who noticed too much.
Sister games:
- **Route Nine** — the villainess-of-a-light-novel edition
- **Route Zero** — the regressor-of-a-cultivation-novel edition
All three: 52 prompts, two tallies, three endings, one book off your shelf. Different world each time.
