The Understudy
A downloadable game
# The Understudy
*A solo journaling game for the second name on the programme.*
---
You are the understudy of **Vera Noctis**, prima donna of the Teatro delle Ombre. For twelve years she has sung every lead. For twelve years you have learned every line of every role she has ever been given. You have practiced her phrasings in a kitchen mirror. You have outlasted three directors and one marriage. Tonight she cannot perform.
Tonight the stage is yours. The house is full. The reviewer from the morning paper is in the third row. The programme has been reprinted with your name on it, in a smaller font, below the words *in place of*.
The orchestra has started to tune.
---
## How it plays
A 52-card deck becomes the three acts of your evening — the dressing room, the stage, and the hours after the curtain. You journal entries as the understudy, drawing one card at a time, marking four **Weights**: Grace, Craft, Pressure, and Vera herself.
Before you begin, you choose **one song**. Any song. It is now the Overture — the piece you perform tonight. Youlisten to it between every act. By the fifth listen, in the morning, it will be a different song.
Between acts you write a line of libretto on the first page of your diary. By the end you have three lines only you have read. The game asks you whether to sing them, speak them, or burn them.
Whichever Weight is heaviest, the ending is yours. There are four of them. One is a standing ovation. One is a letter Vera has left for you in the dressing room — which you write, in her voice, over your own shoulder.
